Dust Abatement for Public Roads

DUST ABATEMENT: What is Dust Abatement and why is it done? Dust abatement is the application of liquid magnesium chloride to City gravel streets. The chemical binds the gravel to limit dust and aid in compaction of the roadways. When does the City start Dust Abatement? The first application will begin this week the first week of June. What is used for Dust Abatement? The chemical used is magnesium chloride hexahydrate brine with a blended corrosion inhibitor.  “Mag Chloride” is a clear, odorless compound derived from brine or sea water and is non-toxic.  It may cause skin and eye irritation with direct contact.  Wash exposed area with soap and water. Who applies it and how is it applied? The City contracts with a company which specializes in dust abatement.  The Mag Chloride is pre-mixed with water and applied with a distributor truck.  It reaches its full penetration into the road bed within approximately two  hours.
